This is the text of my keynote speech at the 34th Chaos Communication Congress in Leipzig, December You can also watch it on YouTube, but it runs to about 45 minutes. As a working science fiction novelist, I take a professional interest in how we get predictions about the future wrong, and why, so that I can avoid repeating the same mistakes. Science fiction is written by people embedded within a society with expectations and political assumptions that bias us towards looking at the shiny surface of new technologies rather than asking how human beings will use them, and to taking narratives of progress at face value rather than asking what hidden agenda they serve.

X is the main year axis, turns once per year with gear B1. As viewed on the front of the Mechanism. There are several gear ratios for each planet that result in close matches to the correct values for synodic periods of the planets and the Sun. The ones chosen above seem to provide good accuracy with reasonable tooth counts, but the specific gears that may have been used are, and probably will remain, unknown.

Homo sapiens first appeared about , years ago At this stage we were still hunter-gatherers, out looking for food rather than growing and rearing our own supplies. These modern hunter-gatherers tend to be shorter and lighter than their urban cousins but still need to consume far more calories due to the additional energy expended in finding food. The ability to adapt our diet has been essential to the human migration from the warmth of Africa to the cold of the Arctic north and the arid heat of the deserts.
JPSS will allow scientists and forecasters to monitor and predict weather patterns with increased speed and accuracy and is the key for continuity of long-standing climate measurements, allowing the study of long-term climate trends. The major challenge of NPOESS was jointly executing the program between three agencies of different size with divergent objectives and different acquisition procedures. The Office of Science and Technology, with the Office of Management and Budget and the National Security Council, as well as representatives from each agency, examined various options to increase the probability of success and reduce the risk to data continuity. The Administration decision for the restructured JPSS Joint Polar Satellite System will continue the development of critical Earth observing instruments required for improving weather forecasts, climate monitoring, and warning lead times of severe storms. The partner agencies are committed to maintaining collaborations towards the goal of continuity of Earth observations from space.
